In a video, a minor girl was beaten up by a village elder in the presence of several others in Andhra Pradesh’s in KP Doddi village in Anantapur district on Wednesday allegedly for eloping with her cousin.
The couple was brought back to the and presented before village elders who sat for a meeting, according to a leading TV channel.
The video shows, while the 20-year-old cousin of the girl is sitting on the ground, the village elder questions the girl. After an answer upset the elderly man, he got up to assault her multiple times. He slaps her first, then kicks and takes a stick to bash her.
No complaint has been lodged yet.
However police said that they will be sending a woman constable to check if a girl will file a complaint. Police said that if she minor says she had a physical relationship with the boy, he will be booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act.
Child rights activist Achyutha Rao of Balala Hakkula Sangham was quoted saying by the channel, “It is a cognisable offence. In such cases, no one can take the law into their hands. They must counsel the youngsters, not behave like moral police. What is shocking is so many villagers were a mute witness when a child was badly beaten up.”
In another incident, upset over her husband’s extramarital affair a 40-year-old woman committed suicide along with her two minor daughters Manasa (17) and Bhumika(15) under the limits of Hanumanta Nagar police station in City on Monday.
Rajeshwari (40), took the extreme step and ended her life along with those of and her daughters Manasa (17), PUC student, Bhumika, studying 10th standard. All three of them were found hanging at their residence in Srinagar Kalappa Layout. In her social media post, Manasa blamed her father for their suicides, police who recovered the mobile said.
