The ruling Trinamool Congress has once again snubbed new West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar even as the later lamented about the treatment meted out to him by the state administration.
Issuing a stern statement against Dhankar, Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee accused the Governor of being partisan’.
The new Governor, within 15 days of joining has exposed himself that he is not a neutral person, by making politically biased statements against the government officers and government departments, Partha Chatterjee claimed in his statement.
The statement comes in the backdrop of the Governor’s maiden visit to north Bengal on Tuesday where he conducted a meeting with all elected representatives and district administration of Darjeeling.
Criticizing the Governor’s move, the TMC secretary general stated, West Bengal is a beautiful state. The Governor must visit beautiful places in West Bengal and enjoy the hospitality of the State Government. This is desirable. What is not desirable is a Constitutional position, unnecessarily becoming over-active, interfering with government business and government officers. While representatives of opposition political parties attended the Governor’s meeting, TMC members skipped it.
Expressing his disappointment over the Mamata Banerjee administration’s lukewarm’ response to his maiden visit to north Bengal, Dhankar said, The lukewarm stand of the state today is a cause of worry for me because I find it not fitting into the culture of Bengal. I came here not because it has a political complexion. I can tell that I will be going to all the districts of West Bengal. It doesn’t matter which political party is having what representation there. I am not in political circus. I am in hardcore constitutional role and that constitutional role cannot be done unless you believe in it, in letter and spirit, Dhankar told reporters in Siliguri.
However, reminding the former Supreme Court advocate of his jurisdiction Partha Chatterjee asked Dhankar to keep mum instead. Governor should not misuse the Constitutional jurisdiction and should avoid political gimmicks every day. Our TMC Government is peoples’ government and is aware what to do and what not to do. Silence please!? Chatterjee said.
Reacting sharply to the TMC’s jibe at the Governor, BJP leader Kailash VIjaivargiya reminded Chatterjee that being a veteran lawyer Dhankar was well aware of his constitutional role.
There can’t be a bigger joke than a minister like Partha Chatterjee trying to explain what is the role of a Governor. Ministers like him should remain in their limit. Instead of pointing finger at the Governor, he should rather focus on his own character, behavior and intellect, the BJP leader quipped.
