1 person arrested in Hubballi railway station blast


One person has been arrested in connection with the explosion which took place at Hubballi railway station on Monday.

The accused has been identified as Saadiq Kuppelur, from old Hubballi. He was allegedly a member of the banned outfit SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India).

The accused worked in the railways in Hubballi, Karnataka.

One person was injured in the explosion when he lifted one of the small plastic boxes found in an unclaimed bucket on a platform, police said.

Five small cubical plastic boxes were found in the bucket, police said.

The blast caused panic as Hubballi is a major junction and the headquarters of the South Western Railway Zone.

Soon after the incident, Railway Protection Force and officials rushed to the spot.

The entire platform was cordoned off and extensive search operation was carried out, police said adding the injured had been hospitalised.

In a statement, the South Western Railways said: “Incident informed to the Local police. Railway police on alert. State police including high officials are at the site. Investigation is on.”

Commenting on the incident, Karnataka Minister for Medium and Large Scale Industries Jagadish Shettar, who represents Hubli-Dharwad Central assembly constituency, said investigation would reveal who placed the explosive at the railway station.
