As Tamil Nadu continues to battle heavy rainfall, flood warning has been issued for 12 districts that are in the downstream sides of the Cauvery River.

Sources said the alert was issued as water inflow in the dam had increased earlier in the day and water is likely to be released on Wednesday morning.

Warnings have been issued in Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Karur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Trichy, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu.

In its first public warning, the Public Works Department (PWD) cautioned people residing near Cauvery banks and low lying areas to move to safer places.

Due to incessant rains earlier in this week, landslips were reported in at least in 10 places in the Nilgiris district, particularly Coonoor, affecting movement of vehicles in the region.

All educational institutions schools and colleges across the Nilgiris were closed on Tuesday over predictions of heavy showers in the district.

Meanwhile, Chennai received its highest rainfall in 24-hours on October 19. The city received 101.6 mm of rainfall.
