Citizens across the country got together on Sunday at 9pm to switch off their lights and light candles, diyas and flashlights on their balconies to showcase unity in the fight against the novel coronavirus. This was after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 9 baje 9 minute appeal.
While many stood on their balconies to show solidarity, few others took to the streets in groups with torches, mobile phone flashlights and candles and defied the lockdown implemented on March 25. This lack of seriousness towards safety led people to criticise those who defied the rules of social distancing.
Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai took to Twitter to share a video of a similar incident. He shared it with the caption, “‘New’ India: Let’s fight corona through science and discipline not irrationality and superstition friends.. this video says it all. #IndiaFightsCorona.”
In the clip, a group of people consisting of men, kids and women, some even without masks, can be seen marching on the streets. They were seen carrying torches, candles and mobile phone flashlights and chanting “Go Corono” again and again.
Since being shared, the video has garnered around 255k views, 14.1k likes and 5.5k retweets. Many took to the comments section to post similar videos. Here’s what people are commenting:
